Natural Beauty DIY: Coconut Oil Sugar Lip Scrub

July 17, 2013

What’s the point of lip scrub?

This is the question I used to ask when I saw lip scrub at the beauty supply store or saw a recipe online.  I am an avid lip balm user, but never understood the point of lip scrub.

Then I started wearing brighter lipsticks.  A bright pink or red lipstick lets all the imperfections of your lips shine through (great) and I started noticing the finer lines and dry skin on my lips, even after applying lip balm. Please stare at my super bright chapped lips!  Err, or don’t stare at them!

So I found a great recipe for a lip scrub (thanks Lauren Conrad) that can be created with two simple ingredients.  I’ve been learning more about the health and beauty benefits of coconut oil and am especially loving this for a lip scrub.  Remember to use an organic, cold pressed coconut oil so that you are maintaining as many of the benefits as possible (I have loved this Vitacost one and it is one of the best priced ones out there).

I love this scrub and it keeps for weeks in the fridge.  Scrub on!

DIY Coconut oil Sugar Lip Scrub

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon caster/fine sugar
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil

Preparation and instructions

1. Mix all ingredients together to create a paste.

2. Apply mixture to your lips and lightly scrub your lips for 30 seconds.  Leave the scrub on your lips for ten minutes.  Then clean mixture from your lips with water or a napkin.  You may find yourself licking some off and that’s ok too!

Benefit Rundown

  • Caster sugar is a natural exfoliant
  • Coconut oil contains lauric acid which is both antibacterial and antifungal (err fungus on my lips sounds like the most disgusting thing ever!)
  • Coconut oil contains vitamin E, a fat soluble antioxidant which nourishes cells and strengthens capillary walls (aka, your lips look refreshed)

This looks awesome, I will need to make this and see how it goes :)) It’s true, you do need a lip scrub as you will see it through your lip stick. This is super cool and will save lots of money too :)) Super. Have a gorgeous day doll xx

It’s so important to use a lip scrub. Certain lipstick shades will show up every fine line you have if you don’t.

What a perfect DIY! So simple, and I’ve got the ingredients too. I bet you could use it over your whole body and smell amazing!

Amber, actually yes this coconut lip scrub could definitely work as a body scrub too! I would maybe add in something like shea butter to make it nice and moisturizing!

Yum! Great DIY! And it would probably work on your feet too 🙂 Not to mention that you can make delicious melted chocolate shell over ice cream with the coconut oil when you’re done (I did last nite–so yummy!)

I have noticed how dry my lips look even though i’m always wearing balm – i should try this!

    • Chic 'n Cheap Living July 17, 2013 at 20:46

Lydia, I used to think lip balm was enough until I started using certain lipsticks and saw my poor lips in the light! It is definitely useful to do a little exfoliation of the lips every now and then!

I’m more of a lip balm user myself, but I know exactly what you mean by the way lipstick will show your imperfections. I think this would be a great organic alternative fora lip scrub, especially since I totally love coconut oil (use it on my hair all the time). And I’ve been looking into the skin benefits of honey as well.

Will be replying to your email shortly! 🙂
