Styling Tip: How to tie a silk (Hermès or other) scarf into a belt

August 15, 2013

Does your style change in the summer?

My outfits consist of easy, breezy pieces that are usually made of cotton or other natural materials. I have my hair up much more often when the weather is warmer.  I’m all about style that is comfortable and less likely to stick to me during this time of year.

I don’t necessarily want to give up my favorite accessories though and still try to incorporate pieces, like my silk scarves, into my outfits. I first styled a favorite scarf into a headband here. To tell you the truth, if it’s a really hot day, I don’t even want to wear a headband for fear of sweating all over the lovely silk fabric!  Sweaty silk fabric = a crinkly, hot mess!

But one of my favorite ways to style a silk scarf is to use it as a belt.  This pairs especially well with a long, free-flowing maxi dress to give your silhouette a little more definition and lend a pop of color as well.

I styled a favorite Splendid LA maxi dress (sold out, but similar one here) with a few different colored scarves and have worn the look for everything from a wedding to a house party.  This was my outfit for a wedding in Tulum

Here are the easy steps to recreate this look:

1. Fold scarf in half diagonally and keep folding in half lengthwise until you are left with a long strip about 2″ wide.

2. Grab both ends of the folded scarf and wrap around your waist from back to front.

3. Tie in front twice or even tie it into a bow (I just use the good ‘ol rabbit ear method).
