Lunar or Chinese New Year Celebration ideas

January 30, 2014

Happy Lunar or Chinese New Year for my friends who celebrate this holiday!

I admittedly don’t know too much about the traditional celebrations, but still wanted to celebrate in my own way with the husband.

Here are some ideas for creating a festive time in the spirit of the new year:

1. Watch a classic movie

We have been watching more movies at home and taking advantage of our Apple TV and Hulu subscription!  It is so nice to set aside some time to just relax and immerse yourself in another world.  Rowena did a fabulous post here on her favorite Asian movies.

I love “In the Mood For Love” – it is simply a beautiful movie in terms of the vibe, cinematography, and wardrobe.

2. Share sweets

Having sweets will symbolize a sweet life and who doesn’t want that right?  See my guest post over at Kim’s blog for a list of lucky foods.

 3. Tidy up!

I know my husband likes any excuse to leave his socks everywhere, but I like the reasoning of clearing out dirt and debris from the past year and giving oneself a fresh new start!

4. Wear Red
Wear something bright, preferably red to bring luck into the new year and for a lighter, brighter mood!

5. Gather together with friends and family

Any holiday is sweet when you share it with loved ones.  Call some friends or family and have a little get together.  Chinese New Year is widely celebrated here and we felt a bit left out so we decided to have our own celebration.  I was just able to book a restaurant for tonight so I’m looking forward to seeing a few friends!

How do you like to celebrate the holidays?

We went down to Chinatown last night and it was craziness– I am sure today was even more so, but Lukus had to work. I’ve enjoyed being exposed to this holiday for the first time!!

    (Oh– and I cleaned today!)
